A dolly made from PVC pipe and skateboard wheels is not going to give you the same smoothness as the real deal.
ADOBE PREMIERE WITH XBOX CONTROLLER HOW TO
That’s why you see so many DIY tutorials showing you how to make your own versions of expensive production equipment but I, like many of you, am often a skeptic. Of course they are! Everything in this industry is. But editing control surfaces are expensive More importantly those are seconds given back to the creative process. This may only save a second here and a second there but those seconds add up over the course of an edit. This is what a control surface can do for you. Or there is a shortcut you use repeatedly in a particular edit that you want to access with a single button press. Let’s say you can navigate to the timeline without having to move your mouse. But let’s say your fingers are already on the in and out shortcut without looking at your keyboard. Tell your editor where on the timeline you would like this to go and then actually place it there. The idea for adding a shot to a sequence happens long before we actually see that shot hit the timeline because there are several steps that need to take place to make it happen. One of the largest hindrances of the editing flow is the need to physically make the edits happen. This is why we often try to be as prepared as possible for these mishaps so that we can get back to creating something. They take the enjoyment out of editing and replace it with technical work.
The point is that all of these things pull you away from the creative process and are frustrating. A hard drive got unplugged and you now have to relocate all of your media. You forgot how to import 4k footage as proxies. The footage was shot in a format that your editor doesn’t read. But how often do we find ourselves being torn away from the creative process trying to conquer technical issues. Video editing is an artistic process and therefore the focus needs to be on creativity. The problem with editing without a control surface
